During Black History month it is common in my industry to get a phone call about "Insure your Love" month. While it is important to insure your loved ones during the month of Love a.k.a. February, I find it more beneficial to address those who may be a little more like me. Those that are African American.

As African Americans this month is more importantly known as Black History Month, and it is a time to reflect on the accomplishments of African Americans as well as the not so pretty portions of our past.

It has only been roughly 56 years since Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I have a Dream Speech" and it seems to me that most African Americans still struggle to take advantage of "the riches of freedom and the security of justice."

It also seems to me that a lot of us still live on "a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity." It is with this in mind, that I propose a call to action to African Americans this month.

This month, please strive for the next level of equality that so many of us seek ---financial freedom. Life insurance is an easy way to begin building multi-generational wealth.

With life insurance, African Americans can inject millions, or perhaps billions of dollars of wealth into our struggling communities and neighborhoods. For less than your latest iPhone or that cup of coffee at Starbucks, you can establish real transferable wealth to your immediate family and beyond.

This month, reach out to me or your local insurance Agent for a free quote and you may be pleasantly surprised at how inexpensive it is to insure your love, and build a legacy that will last for generations to come.

Renters insurance covers your personal property, and covers you from liability claims while you are renting.  While your landlord might be sympathetic to a fire caused by your new flat iron; the loss or damage to your personal belongings is not usually covered by your landlord's insurance. Without renters insurance you could be on the hook for huge expenses like replacing all of your things or finding a place to stay while your home is being repaired.

Imagine having to replace all of the belongings you've acquired year over year all at once? The expense would be huge, and is unlikely to be affordable for most people. This is why we firmly believe that renters insurance is a necessity for anyone that rents; whether or not your landlord or apartment complex requires it.

Here are some other top reasons to get renters insurance:

  • If a guest is injured while visiting you, renters can help pay for their injuries.

  • If that guest is mad that they were injured, they can sue you. Renters insurance can help with your legal bills.

  • If you need a place to stay after a covered loss, renters insurance can help provide a hotel or food.

  • Renters insurance covers your stuff regardless of where it is located. This means if your laptop is stolen out of your car, it's covered. It's even covered if it's stolen while you're traveling around the world, and taking great Instagram selfies.

The bottom line is that renters insurance is a great option for those who would not be able to replace all of their belongings at once, and, who don't want to take the risk of footing the bill for legal fees should someone get seriously injured while visiting.

If you have a lot to lose, you need an umbrella policy. Let me rephrase that...anyone with assets they don't want to lose will benefit from an umbrella policy. Here's why:

Today's society is extremely litigious, and therefore frivolous lawsuits are a dime a dozen. Anyone can sue you for any reason. If you are saving and investing your money, you have something to lose, and should consider an umbrella policy. Umbrella policies provide additional liability coverage above your auto and homeowners/renters insurance. In other words, an umbrella sits on top of your current auto and homeowners/renters policy liability limit. In addition to the obvious, an umbrella provides coverage for libel, slander, defamation of character and any rental properties you may own. Here are some examples of an Umbrella in action:

  • Your dog bites someone

  • Your neighbors child drowns in your pool

  • You blog and write something bad about a company and get sued for defamation

  • Your child gets in a fight at school, and injures another student

  • You chaperone a field trip and some gets injured or dies

  • You critically injure someone in an accident that is your fault

  • Your teenager drivers his friends to school and injures them in an accident

  • A neighbor slips on your steps and sues you

The list goes on and on. The point is that any one of these incidents could lead to a judgment against you that could be devastating to your finances. If protecting your assets and future earnings is of interest to you. I highly recommend an umbrella.
